Here at CTV3 we always welcome stories that involve youth in a positive manner. With that said, today we shine the spotlight on two youth from the Orange Walk District who along with two other youth from Belize City will be representing the country of Belize in a three days sporting event scheduled to take place in El Salvador. The team will head out to El Salvador next week so this evening we paid them a visit while they underwent training at the Orange Walk Peoples Stadium.

Jimmy Smith, Trainer

“This event is a race country cross that is a Central American game that will be held in El Salvador, Chalatenango, and two of them will represent in 12k and 6k, Nelly will run 6k and Orlando Castillo will run 12k,.”

Hipolito Novelo-Reporter

“How did you about in choosing these four individual to participate in the event?”

Jimmy Smith, Trainer

“I saw Nelly here running and just asked her if she would want to train and be for a race on a National race and then she said yes, and then Orlando I saw him too and then just asked him about if he is willing to just go to a race.”

Today 21 year old Orlando Castillo and Nelita Novelo told us how proud they were to be able to participate in the sporting event.

Orlando Castillo, Athlete

“Well when I go out there I try to do the best I can and I hope the best is good enough.”

Nelita Novelo, Athlete

“Well first of all we began coming here me and my friend we started to run ever since before Christmas we started to come here and run and during that time we use to do some laps and then we met Mr. Jimmy and then he started to encourage us to get into this program running, and the way we train is that we usually come here and we do some laps and we do some different stretches and things like that that would help us to improve our duration during our running.”

Hipolito Novelo-Reporter

“Well, they haven’t told us to go on any specific diet but one thing for sure is that we have to drink a lot of water during the day, have breakfast, a good twelve o’clock meal and of course at night eat something that would help us for the other day to continue.”

Hipolito Novelo-Reporter

“How good do you think you will represent Belize in El Salvador?”

Nelita Novelo, Athlete

“It all depend it depends on how much I want to put my effort and if I think that I could go, well to last longer I think tht yes I would be able to represent Belize good.”

Orlando Castillo is set to compete in the 12k run while Novelo will participate in the 6k run. The group is schedule to leave Belize next week with all expense paid. CTV3 news wishes the competitors the best of luck.
