Screen_shot_2012-01-27_at_7.57.38_PMToday the Belize Adventist Junior College held its annual Health Fair at the Corozal Central Park under the theme “Health is Wealth, Gods 8 Health Laws”. From what we found out this morning, the main goal of the fair was to generate awareness and educate the public on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

The Health Fair has become a priority for both the students and faculty of the Belize Adventist Junior College, because it gives them the opportunity to educate the public on how to live a healthy lifestyle. For the students it was an exciting moment since the fair allowed them to showcase some of what they have learnt in class.

Elmer Cornejo – Student, Belize Adventist Junior College

“Each booth is designated as a team also, for example we have the cancer booth, we have the HIV and the glucose booth and each one of these the people have prepared themselves what the disease is all about, how we can help prevent disease and if you have the disease what we can do and where to go for help in Corozal.”

“What is the purpose of this event?”

Elmer Cornejo – Student, Belize Adventist Junior College

“We have seen that Corozal is one of the districts in Belize who have sick people in terms of, mostly people who have diabetes, pressure and HIV so that is why we came up with this health fair, my school and the administration amongst other students have joined hands together and we try to do our best a healthier of this magnitude to reach our Corozalenos and our Orange walkenos.”

This year, the fair, which was celebrated under the theme “Health is Wealth, God’s 8 Health Laws” consisted of a variety of booths which spoke about Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperament, Rest and Trust in God.

At the Nutrition booth we found Jaime Magana who spoke to us about the importance of drinking water. Water, as we all know, plays a vital role in our daily lives but there are many of us who just don’t drink enough water. According to Magana that has consequences.

Jaime Magana – Primary Ed and Science Teacher

“Each booth is about water, we recognize that water is one of the gifts that God has given us to be able to enjoy good health and there isn’t anything that is able to substitute water, therefore we are here promoting drinking water and speaking about using it internally benefits and also external benefits of water ”

With its educative and eye-catching posters, the HIV Booth was able to attract many visitors who, despite the needles, took advantage of the free HIV, Blood Pressure and Glucose Testing.

And since the testing was free, I took time out from work to check my Blood Pressure to ensure that I am in good health.

From what we were able to observe Cancer, Diabetes and HIV Aids were three of the most important topics discussed during the fair. And to remind women how important it is to conduct a breast exam, Cancer survivor Collen White, was in charge of spreading the message.

Eric Baptist – Student, Belize Adventist Junior College

“This booth is about cancer, the causes of cancer and the prevention of cancer and we are promoting the full vegetarian diet that cuts out all meat which means that cancer will be able to be even cured through this process.”

Colleen White – Survivor of Cancer

“It was devastating for me that at the age of 43 almost 44 I was diagnose with breast cancer, I went to the United States, I had chemotherapy but I wasn’t so happy about not eating what I know I should have eaten and I believe that is why it came back, now when I was 55 I was diagnose with cancer again but this time I was at home, I didn’t went to the states this time and every time I came from Merida doing chemotherapy or radiation I would gather a lot of beans, a lot of carrots, a lot of celery, and I wasn’t working at the time I was retired and I would drink that and I know that with that and with God’s heavy hands of healing on me that is how I have overcome , I can tell it is sad but family helped me through and I need to say that God was with me because there are times when I travelled and I even had to drink milk and egg to just have the strength and I strongly believe that that carrots and that beet and that celery had a lot to do with my healing.”

According to students the fair would not have been possible without the assistance of the community.

And just in case you want to start living a healthy life then here are some tips. The first step to living a healthy life is to start eating healthier foods.  That means that no more greasy foods. The best foods to consume are natural foods.  And according to students of the Belize Adventist Junior College, one should drink at least 8 glasses of water, sleep at least 8 to 9 hours and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day
