One thousand registered To Vote In Orange Walk In a Span Of Two Weeks

Screen_shot_2012-01-20_at_9.24Friday January 19th was the cut-off date for voter registration for the upcoming Municipal Elections. According to the Elections and Boundaries Department between December 10th and Thursday 19th of January, over 5,000 new registered voters had been recorded countrywide. The highest numbers of new applicants have been documented here in the North and according to reports; most of them are persons who recently received their Belizean Certificate. Here in the Orange Walk District a total of 1000 persons visited the Elections and Boundaries Office to register to vote from January 6th to January 19th. The increase in the amount of voter registration over the last few weeks shows the desperation of a political party that is basically lost in oblivion and as a last resort has relied on registering voters under a fraudulent address in order to pad the voters list in time for the Municipal Elections.

As mentioned, here in Orange Walk there were 1,000 new applicants in a span of two weeks most of who do not even live in town or much less a village within the Orange Walk District. The individuals we understand were brought from out district and registered in different parts of town by using a fraudulent address.

In Orange Walk Central, CTV3 News understands that 343 persons registered to vote in a matter of 13 days, majority of the new registrants were new Belizeans. As we have mentioned before, CTV3 News has received a number of calls from persons stating that their address has been used illegally. Giving credibility to those reports is the famous recording in which two campaigners for U.D.P Orange Walk Central Standard Bearer Denny Grijalva, are heard pursuing a potential voter, to register under a false address. Now that is completely illegal. But from what we were able to gather from the recording its a crime allegedly condoned by Grijlava himself.

Now taking a look at Orange Walk South, records show that from January 6th to the 19th, 348 persons registered to vote, most of them being New Belizeans. In Orange Walk North there were 168 new applicants while in Orange Walk East there were 141. But despite the long list of registered voters the P.U.P has stated that they will do some investigation of their own to ensure that all those who applied to vote for the upcoming Municipal Elections, did so by using the proper information.

John Briceno

we have our own team of investigators, our own team of people that are taking these names as we get them one by one, going house to house visiting these homes to find out if it is true that they are registering there and we are finding out that the majority vast majority probably as much as 90% of these new registrations of the people they do not live on these areas and thirdly we are taking legal actions against these people, we are getting a lawyer or a team of lawyers if necessary and we are going to challenge every single one of them one by one. Many of these people are law abiding citizens, they are hard working citizens, they are hard working brother and sisters from Central America and they deserve getting their nationality we are not against the idea of getting their nationality so we understand that they are trying to get it but at the same time they should not allow themselves with those unscrupulous politicians, want to be politicians like the pastor who is trying to get them to break the law, getting them to lye that the first action that these people are taking is one in breaking the laws of Belize, when they took their citizenship, when they took their oath of allegiance to Belize they are saying that they will take an oath, that they are going to uphold and fallow the laws of this country, they are not doing that so.”

The Peoples United Party has until Friday to challenge any name that they find suspicions on the list. The decision to remove a persons name from the list will be left up to the court. The final supplementary list will also be released on Friday January 25th.
