In his press conference yesterday where he announced that Municipal and General Elections will be held on March 7th, the Prime Minister of Belize Dean Oliver Barrow fielded a number of questions from the media. Apart from being questioned about the reasons behind the calling of early elections, which he stated was to save tax payers money, the Prime Minister was also asked to talk about what he had not been able to accomplish during his tenure. Of course in all his pompousness the Prime Minister mentioned that he could not remember a thing that he did not accomplish.
But we here at CTV3 News will take time out to refresh his memory. He promised Belizeans to bring down the cost of living no matter what- that was not accomplished. He promised to create 5,000 new jobs-that was not accomplished. He promised to keep the cost of fuel below the $8.00 mark- that was not accomplished. He promised to reduce the crime rate- that was not accomplished. He promised to empower the senate-that was not accomplished. He promised Belizeans ownership of the oil company- that was not accomplished. He promised to create new jobs in the Tourism Industry- that was not accomplished. He promised to lower taxes and instead he raised GST and income tax on the middle class- So that was not accomplished. He promised zero tolerance in corruption and then there was the scandal at KHMH, scandal at Social Security, scandal at the Lands Department and scandal at the Ministry of Works- So that was not accomplished.
Presently the country’s poverty rate stands at 43% and still climbing, 25% of the country’s adult population is without a job, the cost per gallon of fuel is above $10.00 and last year the crime rate was sky high.
Now let’s take a look at what the Prime Minister did accomplish. He gave his son Shyne Barrow diplomatic status by naming him Belize’s Musical Ambassador. When Government took over B.T.L, Dean Barrow named his second son Anwar Barrow Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. But that’s not all because over a period of two years Dean Barrow paid his ex-wife Lois Young a whopping $1.5 million to represent Government in several high profile cases and there was still an outstanding balance. In addition to collecting legal fees, Young also serves as the Corporate Secretary to the Belize Telemedia Board of Directors and the Chairman of the Social Security Board. Barrow gave oil drilling concessions in protected areas to his nephew Kimano Barrow. And then there was Dennis Barrow the P.M’s brother. After he suddenly resigned as a judge on the Court of Appeal with the intention of returning to private practice according to him, Dennis Barrow was signed up to represent the Government in the Telemedia Legal battles along with Louis Young. As part of his perks Denys Barrow was also able to purchase a 2010 Buick Enclave CLX-2 Sport utility vehicle valued at more than $70,000 through the Ministry of Finance. So with Dean Barrow, Belizeans can just imagine the possibilities. Now just imagine another five years under his Administration.
