As we mentioned last night political pundits are already saying that Barrows decision to call early elections may have been influenced by the fact that the PM could not afford an embarrassment should his party lose major ground in the March 7th Municipal Elections. While there are many speculations as to why the Prime Minister called early elections, because it’s definitely not to save tax payers money as he mentioned yesterday, today we spoke to former Leader of the Opposition and Orange Walk Central Area Representative Honorable John Briceno who gave us his thoughts on the issue.
Honorable John Briceno- Orange Walk Central Area Representative
“We need to ask ourselves why is it that the Prime Minister is calling the election, if we look at his record we would adhere a dismal record, if you look at his report card he has failed with the economy, failed in jobs, failed in creating opportunities for our Belizeans, he has failed in the economy with the issue of crime and this are just some of the issues w are taking, we look at the issues of infrastructure again another failure, the Prime Minister has failed in every step of the way. Right now he spending all of these monies to try to create an illusion that things are back in track, as things are happening in Belize, that the economy is starting to pickup and he has created that illusion like a magician but when you look at the sad reality, the reality is that people continue to lose their jobs, people continue to lose their homes, businesses are closing down, the economy continues to slow down, and that there is no opportunity for Belizeans, now he needs to present his budget and it is usually presented in March so obviously he is taking advantage of feeling that he will have a bad budget to present and the results of these coming year by the time we end the year it will show that it was a bad year for the government, that they have mismanaged the budget, that they have mismanaged the economy and they continue to make things worse for Belizeans so before they show all these bad record you can confirmed it, I believe that he is throwing the dice and he is gambling. I believe that the Prime Minister believes things are going to get worst for him, that the economy is going to get worst, that people are going to lose more jobs, that businesses are going to continue to close down and before things get worst I believe that he has deiced to try to call the election one year ahead of time.”
In his nations address yesterday the Prime Minister of Belize listed out some of Governments accomplishments. But among the list says Briceno, was none of the promises that the Prime Minster made to the Belizean people back in 2008.
Honorable John Briceno- Orange Walk Central Area Representative
“For a man of lot of words that is quite surprising because the prime minister has words for everything, he always has answer for everything but the sad reality is that he has failed, the sad reality is that he prepared to create 5000 jobs and unemployment now is at 24% between women and young men, the unemployment rate is as high as 40%, crime continues to spiral out of control, he has no control over his ministers and he sees that the house of cards is falling down so before the house of cards fall down he decides to call a snap election maybe I catch the opposition asleep and I believe maybe by doing that I can get another shot, that’s what he is thinking but I believe that the Belizean people are smarter, the Belizean people have seen the four years of work of the UDP, or lack of work, the Belizean people have lived four years of the UDP government and I am convinced that the majority of the Belizean people are not satisfied, yes you can go out and find a few people that are satisfied but those are the ones that belong to friends and family program only the cronies of the prime minister and family members, people that are close to him are the ones that have benefitted but vast majority of Belizeans are worst off than they were in 2008. We need to start off by stating that they did not gave us enough time to be able to do an investigation on all of the applicants, there are instances that we did not get information so that we can try to pin point where these people are registered but we did the best that we can and we are objecting a little over a hundred applicants that we are convinced that do not live in Orange Walk Central, we are not against the people, we are not against them registering to vote but what we don’t support is that them trying to register in an area where they don’t live, we believe that the people of Orange Walk Central should and must make the decision who they want to the area representative.”
On Friday the Governor General will dissolve the National Assembly and nomination day has been set for February 17th.
