Despite The Hurdles PUP Must Move Forward Says Party Leader

But as they say the show must go on and with only 33 days away from Municipal and General Elections the race is surely to become a heated one. March 7th is a day that some people are already calling the end of the U.D.P and the beginning of the P.U.Ps reign. Again that is left up to the people. But according to Leader of the Opposition Honorable Francis Fonseca, the party is confident that on Election Day Belizeans will head out to the polls and make the necessary change that is needed in order to move the country forward. ……………………………….

“We were preparing for March 7th like everyone else across the country I think people knew the elections were very close and especially after all the activity we have seen in the government since December, they haven’t done anything for the Belizean people for four years but they knew they would be calling elections on March so there has been a flurry of activities in the government since December we know with the giveaway they started in December, the mass naturalization program, social security board, insider trading scheme all of these things had us believe clearly that elections were going to be on March 7th and so we have been preparing for that, we are working towards that goal and the People’s United Party is ready for elections on March 7th.

Fonseca also reiterated what P.U.P Orange Walk Central Area Representative Honorable John Briceno had already stated, the Prime Minister of Belize called early elections not thinking about the tax payers, but simply because he had no choice.

Honorable Francis Fonseca- P.U.P Leader

“I think the real reason is that the prime minister in particular recognizes that he has absolutely no solutions to the problems the country is facing and he know that things will only get more difficult in 2012, and certainly in term of the economic outlook it is a very negative economic outlook for the country and so the prime minister knew that if he had to prepare a budget and to read that budget to the Belizean people it would be a very negative budget and it would be very difficult in fact for him to say to the Belizean people that the government of Belize was in a position to meet  its commitments, to meet its current expenditure, to meet its debt obligation, to meet its capital expenditure program so the prime minister recognizes that the country is in crisis, he knows it is only going to get worst and he has no answers and so he is not prepared to face the people in the budget debate to explain why the country is in this crisis so he prefers to go to elections and hope to use whatever resource that is available to the government at this time and to really tell the people lies to spin the UDP propaganda that things will get better when in fact he knows that in reality that things will only get worst under a UDP government.”

As it pertains to the finances of the party, Fonseca says while the P.U.P does not have the type of money the U.D.P has, the party will still put up a fight. After all says Fonseca, when Belizeans are ready for change not even money can save a political party.

Honorable Francis Fonseca- P.U.P Leader

“The party is very prepared and I set as my objective having the campaign infrastructure of the party ready by end of December, we achieved that objective.  We have had challenges raising funds in the past but I think we have been able over the past few months to address that issue, the PUP will not as we have said for many years, the PUP will not have the funds to match the UDP and that is not our goal we are not trying to do that but we will have adequate funds to put up a very strong effective campaign and we believe it will be a very successful campaign.

But in order to win an election a party must be united. It is no secret that over the past months the P.U.P has gone through some rough times. But Fonseca says all that has been left behind and despite a few differences it is time to work towards the future of the Belizean people.

Honorable Francis Fonseca- P.U.P Leader

“I think the party is as united as it has expected to be, there will always be difference in a political party but we are as united as we can be going into an election, I believe that we have strong candidates and we will fight to the very end, we had one of our candidates in Caribbean Shores, Anthony Mahler has step down for personal reasons but I think it is remarkable how quickly the party has moved to address that issue and we have a very united team in Caribbean Shores Anthony Mahler serving as the campaign manager for the new candidate Dr. David Hoy who is a very strong credible candidate who working along with Anthony Mahler will deliver Caribbean Shores for the People’s United Party, so we are united as we can expect at this point and I think over the five week the people will see to demonstrate and even in a more credible way how united we are and how committed we are from removing the UDP from government.”

Today the House Of Representatives was dissolved by the Governor General of Belize Sir Colville Young. Nomination Day is set for February 17th.
