orange-walk-market3Yesterday government announced immediate remedial road improvements along with larger scale major road rehabilitations across the country. In addition to that, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that the government will also be providing financial assistance to the agriculture sector after receiving a preliminary report of damages to other crop. According to the report, farmers, including those in the north, have lost millions of dollars as a result of the recent inclement weather.

“Latest preliminary report we are looking in terms of crop damaged at people suffering in Cayo, Belize, Orange Walk, Corozal a total of $2,634,600.00 by way of losses and we are talking about soy beans, 800 acres having been destroy 350 acres of corn, having been destroyed 50% of vegetable farmers affected an if the weather persists all the vegetable farmers will be affected.”

The assessment indicates that if the weather continues the same way, farmers may very well lose more and all farmers will be seeing loses. The Prime Minister says that given the situation, the government will be providing some assistance.

“We can’t pay the for the loss of earnings but we can certainly help in terms of doing things like providing funding for seeds so that they can replant and we will thus in terms of the ministries estimate give $223,000.00 by way of assistance at the farmers to help with the restart I which they must engage.”

In addition, livestock producers have also seen their fair share of losses as a result of the heavy rains and again, the Prime Minister says they will also be helping this sector.
