Over the holiday weekend, a total of three suicides were recorded in the Northern districts; one in Corozal, a 13 year old female student and two in Orange Walk, both male persons.
On Friday, 13 year old Frances Diana Salam a Corozal Community College student from Santa Rita Area, Corozal Town, was found dead at the back of her residence hanging from a rope. Police investigations have revealed that at around 4:15pm, PC Sotero Salam, attached to the Special Branch arrived at home along with his wife and two daughters ten and twelve years of age respectively.
He knocked on the front door but no one responded. His ten year old daughter then went to the back of the residence and discovered the body of her sister hanging from the rope. The ten year old immediately informed her father about the discovery. PC Sotero then brought down the body and laid his daughter on the floor.
The body was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital where it was pronounced dead by Dr. Angela Gilhary. Over the weekend Frances Diana Salam was laid to rest in Punta Gorda Town.
While the entire Corozal Community is in shock, there are more questions than answers lingering in the air. The most important one being, what would push a 13 year old student, described as being vibrant and intelligent to take her life? Police are still investigating.
