Sugar-Cane-2Chair of the Committee of Management at the BSCFA, Ezekiel Cancino met with directors of the eighteen branches and discussed the latest draft of the agreement sent to the BSCFA by BSI. Following a much welcomed breakthrough in the negotiations a few weeks back, the process has been stalled once again by a clause that BSCFA says was inserted in the draft agreement. that clause was not agreed upon at previous meetings. BSI has sent back its amended draft but still, farmers are not very satisfied with the results.

Cansino says they are hoping to hear back from their lawyer early next week. The second topic on the agenda in today’s meeting was the petition by some of the directors that was received yesterday in which they are calling for a general assembly to seek farmers’ input in the latest developments of the negotiations. According to Cansino, a few of the other directors do not think this is a good idea.

So that is where the negotiations stand. There is still no agreement and the crop is being delayed well into the next year.
