In other related news, the Town Council is cracking down on gambling in public spaces. Noted recently has been a spike in gambling rings at the Market Square, Parks and other public spaces. The Council informs the public that Gambling in Public places is an offence under the Gambling Prevention Act Chapter 109 Revised Edition 2000. Section 5 of this Act reads and we quote, “All persons found at any time gambling, or assembled together for such purpose, in any public or open place shall on conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars, or to imprisonment for any term not exceeding three months.” The release ends stating that all persons who continue to use public spaces for gambling purposes will be dealt with according to the law. In Belize, the card game pitty pat and dominoes are among the most popular gambling games. It only becomes illegal if betting for money is involved.
