robberyWhile the rest of the Easter weekend would prove to be free of any significant criminal incident, it started off with a bang. On Thursday night a Chinese businessman from the Orange Walk District gave two burglars a taste of rough justice when he took matters into his own hands and injured both men who tried to rob his establishment.

The incident happened at around 9:30pm when two armed men, one of dark complexion and the other of brown complexion entered Yi Gen Store located on Zericote Street and held the store owners wife at gunpoint. Reports are that as they entered the establishment, one of the armed robbers jumped over the counter, pointed a 9mm pistol at Jin Huan Wu and demanded money.

At the time of the robbery a number of customers along with shop owner Yi Gen Wu were inside the establishment. When Wu saw that his wife was in danger he took out his licensed 9mm pistol and fired at both robbers. As the second armed robber shot back at Yi Gen Wu, 31 year old Yilvia Cansino and her 11 year old son Carlos Cansino who were shopping at the store at the time were shot on the right ankle.

Today, as Yilvia Cansino relived the dreadful ordeal, she told us off camera she was about to pay for items she had purchased when all hell broke loose right before her eyes.

“When I was finished I went to the counter to pay and I was just taking out my money when I felt somebody brushed passed me and he jumped over the counter and grabbed the chiney lady and told her not to move and pointed gun on her face and then he turned around and said nobody move. He pointed the gun at our direction so I did not move I was directly in front of him in shock. I heard a gunshot and it was he who shot in the air and then I heard the chiney lady told her husband to get the gun. After that I heard gunshots at the back and all I felt was a burning in my right foot but I did not apy it mind and I just looked form other two kids and ran in the aisle.”

Cansino says as she made her way back to one of the aisles she called the Police. At that time she had no idea her 11 year old son had been shot.

“He and my daughter were behind me and my daughter got burnt with the gun the fellow fell and the gun fell on her foot and since the gun was hot it burnt her foot.

Carmelita Perez- Reporting

Do you have any idea which of the shot caught you and your son was it from the firearm used by the Chinese businessman or was it from the one used by the robber?”

Yilvia Cansino- Robbery witness

“I have no idea which of the shots caught me and my son I can’t specify from who it came from. When the gunshot went off he jumped over the counter and that is when I grabbed my son and ran from there I don’t know what else happened.”

While the two robbers were injured one of them managed to escape from Police, leaving a 9mm pistol behind. He has been identified as one Jeremy Rhaburn who was arrested by Belize City Police on Friday after he visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and right leg. As for the second robber, he has been identified as 22 year old Miguel Medina of Trial Farm Village. Medina was shot on the knee and was unable to escape. We understand he was detained by Police and taken to the NRH for treatment before being transferred to the KHMH for surgery. CTV3 News understands that several charges including robbery will be levied against both men. Nothing was stolen from the establishment.
