Well on its way to establishing viable standard bearers in all 31 political constituencies in the country, the People’s United Party held two conventions this weekend – one in the Freetown constituency in Belize City on Saturday and the other in the Cayo West constituency on Sunday.
On Saturday, residents of Freetown came out en masse to endorse Area Representative Francis Fonseca, the three time champion of the division. Fonseca will be challenged in upcoming general elections by the UDP’s choice in the area, newcomer Lee Mark Chang.
On Sunday, three strong candidates offered themselves as PUP standard bearers in Cayo West – Oscar Sabido, Lisbey Guerra and Hector Pacheco. More than 1400 strong PUP members showed up to support their champions, and when votes were counted, Sabido was victorious with 597 votes; Lisbey Guerra received 534 votes and Hector Pacheco received 279 votes.
To date the People’s United Party have successfully chosen 19 standard bearers, and the national Executive of the Party has committed to complete the selection of all 31 by the end of June.
