Forty members of the Belize Police Department and the Belize National Forensic Science Services are currently participating in a five day training course on Forensic Ballistics conducted by a specialist from the Mexican Federal Attorney Generals Office.

The training, carried out at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan, is the first of four courses included in the 7th Technical and Scientific Cooperation Program Belize-Mexico 2010/2011. It includes identification of firearms and ammunition, microscope analysis, ballistics laboratory standards, integrated ballistics identification system and field work.

According to Public Relations Officer for the Mexican Embassy in Belize Licenciado Marcelino Miranda, the objective of the course is to contribute to Belizes capacity building on forensics and to train Belizean authorities in new ballistic methods and techniques.

“El Gobierno de México y Belice ambos lo demostraran han analizado cuales son las necesidades de Belice, en materia de seguridad, embace a esta solicitud de apoyo por parte de Belice el gobierno de México está proporcionando capacitación a los elemento de la policía de Belice sobre todo en materias que les puedan ayudar a fortalecer el combate al crimen. Uno de ellos es la capacitación a la policía en materia de balística esto va a permitir que los elementos de la policía tenga mejor capacitación en análisis de arma de fuego y amuniciones que son hallados en las escenas del crimen. Asimismo el gobierno de Belice se está fortaleciendo el laboratorio el forense que tiene en Ladyville con el apoyo de otros países. Esto va a permitir que se complemente con el apoyo del gobierno de México está brindando a la policía de tal manera que la policía encuentre un mejor entrenamiento y sobre todo mejor equipamiento para elevar el número de sentencias condenatorias ante la corte.”

The program will run from the 9th to the 13th of May. The Mexican facilitator has extensive experience in ballistics and is one of the leading trainers from Mexicos Attorney Generals Office.
