Following reports that Chairman of the Board of Directors at KHMH Dr. Ricardo Fabro had been removed and replaced by a businessman from the Corozal Commercial Free Zone, today our newsroom made the requisite calls to try and dig up more information.
We managed to reach CEO of the KHMH Dr. Francis Longsworth, who told us that the members of the board are appointed at the sole discretion of Minister of Health Pablo Marin, so he would not be able to comment. Asked if the new Chairman has taken up his post, Longsworth would tell us only that a press release on the matter will be issued soon.
A call to the Ministry of Health was futile, as we were told that both CEO Dr. Peter Allen and the Director of Health Services Dr. Michael Pitts were out for the day.
So we placed a call to former Chairman Dr. Ricardo Fabro, who was quick to point out that he had not been removed and it was a simple matter of his appointment not being renewed. Fabro will probably be remembered most for the KHMH Commission of Inquiry into alleged corruption at the institution under his watch. He was forced to step aside in July of 2009 pending the findings of the Commission, which issued its finding on December 18, 2009. When asked if he would comment on the appointment of the new Chairman, Fabro told us that he had no idea who it was so he could not comment.
Reports are that the post of chairman has been gifted to a businessman from the Corozal Commercial Free Zone, Gulab Sharma. We have not been able to verify Sharma’s qualifications, but are told that he is a close friend and supporter of Minister of Health Pablo Marin.
