corozal_schoolThis morning it was all about the importance of communication, transportation and the rights of the child at the open day held by the Church of Christ Primary School in Corozal. But this was no ordinary open day because instead of having the exhibits on the schools compound, students stayed in class and did their presentations. When we visited the school today we learnt about places we need to visit in case of an emergency and the importance of eating healthy food.

When we take a look at these smiling faces it is hard to imagine what they have on their minds at the ages of four and five. But today at the Corozal Church of Christ Open Day we found out that with the help of their teachers and parents these bright minds actually know more than we can imagine.

These students from infant one know about eating healthy, building homes and even what are and aren’t their responsibilities.

Shamira- Infant one Student

Carmelita Perez- Reporter

“And what do we do in there?”

Infant one Student

“We get shelter form the rain and from the sun.”

Carmelita Perez- Reporter

“Which one of these are one of your responsibilities?”

Infant one Student

“Dress myself.”

Carmelita Perez- Reporter

“What is another of your responsibilities?”

Infant one Student

“Help feed the dog and pickup toys.”

Carmelita Perez- Reporter

corozal_school_2In the Integrated Learning Center Class students were taught about their rights and responsibilities focusing on basic needs and education.

Elena Clavel- Infant one Teacher

“Basic needs of food, clothing, love and care and we just had them integrated in groups and they did their little models and brought in samples. The game that the little boy did they did it in class and we had asked the parents to help with the game and they are the ones that are going to explain it. This is just to show them their rights and what their but also responsibilities.”

Carmelita Perez- Reporter

“As a teacher how important is it for them would you say to get to know what their rights are at such an early age?”

Elena Clavel- Infant one Teacher

“It is very important for their personal development and to give them that awareness that they have rights but behind the rights there are certain things that they must do to benefit from the rights.”

Our stop at the infant two classes taught us all about where to go in case of an emergency.

Keysha- Infant two Student

“When you have an emergency you go to the fire station when your house is on fire.”

Infant two Student

“When something happen to you then you go to the hospital.”

The importance of communication was also showcased today as students of the standard three classes brought out phones, radios, computers and even newspapers.

Josel Cruz- Standard three Student

“This is one way of communicating, by newspaper. Here are some examples of newspaper and you can find a lot of information in a newspaper for example about sports, business, government news, health corners, auction sales and even about crime and even the college has its own newspapers. The first newspaper in Belize was the Billboard followed by the Beacon. Here are some U.D.P Newspapers and some P.U.P newspapers. The elderly people they like to read their newspaper on the weekends and if you don’t have a television or radio you can buy your newspaper and you will find all the information that you need.”

According to the school’s General Manager David Victor Diego, the Open Day showcases the work of the students, teachers and parents.

David Victor Diego- General Manager Corozal Church of Christ Primary School

“We are trying to take out the best of education from our children, as you notice our motto to the back it states there “Educating the Mind and the Soul” and we also include the body. And so we try to look that children get the theoretical part of education, the arts and sport and everything so that they could be good for the society after they leave here.”

The open day also showcased the importance of recycling and transportation. This is the second year that an open day has been held by the school.
