busWill there be a breakthrough between the Northern Bus Operators and the Ministry of Transport? Or more importantly, will the Minister of Transport the Honorable Melvin Hulse give the Northern Bus Operators what they are asking for and revisit the new bus routes and schedules?

Well, thats left to be seen but what we do know is that Hulse has agreed to meet with bus operators tomorrow at 10:00am at the old Fisheries Department in Belize City located on Princess Margret Drive. Today when we spoke to Abner Chell, a member of the Northern Bus Operators and the Belizean Bus Association over the phone, he told us that several issues will be laid on the table. These include a request to Government to desist from implementing the new bus routes and schedules on Sunday May 22nd and for the bus routes and schedules to be revisited with the input of the Belizean Bus Association.

Chells Bus Service is just one of the bus companies that lost their runs due to the new routes and schedules. While Chell applied for 8 runs, four from Orange Walk to Chetumal and four from Orange Walk to Belize City, the company received none. In fact the only thing they got was a shuttle run from Orange Walk to Carmelita Village which they did not apply for.

Another bus company which also lost its runs is Cabreras Bus Service. While the company applied for three runs, from Douglas to Belize, San Pablo to Belize and from Orange Walk to Belize City and back, none was granted. Instead what the company was awarded was a shuttle run from San Pablo to Orange Walk.

If the runs are not revisited, bus companies say they stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. Be sure to tune in to CTV3 News tomorrow night for an update on the outcome of the meeting.
