Will the world end tomorrow? Thats the question on a lot of minds after news spread across the globe that Judgment Day will be on May 21st 2011. Harold Camping, the 89-year-old founder of Family Radio, pinpointed May 21 as the exact date of Judgment Day based on clues he says he found in the Bible. But this is not the first time that Camping has predicted the end of the world. The first time he did so was in 1994 when he stated that the end of the world would be in the month of September.

Obviously his prediction did not come true. But is he wrong now? According to Father Amelio Chi of the La Inmaculada Catholic Church, to some extent he is.

“We do believe the words of Jesus Christ that there will be a second coming in the end of time that is the Judgement which is an article of faith that we profess in the Catholic Church so in that sense it is true. As to a specific date there is none because when Jesus was talking about the second coming in the book of Mathew Jesus said that no one knows, not even the angels, not even the son Jesus, but only the father knows. In fact Jesus said that there will be signs and maybe that is what they are talking about but no one knows what the exact date only the father knows it. I know that in times past there have been predictions but none of those have come to past.”

So where do these predictions come from? It all depends on how you interpret the messages written in the Holy Bible.

Father Amelio Chi- La Inmaculada Catholic Church

“When we look at the word of God the scripture is not what you call an exact science meaning that you can take certain images or numbers attach it and make your own calculations. The word of God or the Bible for us in the Catholic Church has four senses in has the literal sense for example the 666 that is a literal interpretation and those who think like that they think it is that number. So in the Catholic Church we have the literal sense and the spiritual sense, we have the moral sense and the eschatological sense what does it have to do with the end of the world. So if there are people who take numbers and add it and see it and interpret it the word of God is so big that I think that there is a loophole somewhere. But the fact that they are putting a number it is call to be ready and in that sense agree with them be ready, be ready every day, be ready even if you are going to die today and not tomorrow. I do believe that there is some truth that the world will come to an end.”

Based on the Mayan Calendar, predictions have also been made that the world will come to an end in 2012.
