In 2010 the Organization for Responsible Tourism (ORT) reported that 30 percent of human trafficking victims entering the US can be traced to Belizes human trafficking superhighway. Back then the report indicated that due to poor immigration practices, which enable border corruption, Belize was on the brink of being placed on Tier 3 status, under the USs anti-trafficking in persons act, for its inaction on human trafficking.

But the truth of the fact is that Human Trafficking is a global problem and just like Belize, Mexico also finds itself combating the dreadful crime which usually involves children. Today, in order to promote the discussion on Human Rights, the Embassy of Mexico in Belize, held a “Day for the Rights of a Child” by conducting several activities here in the north starting off with a puppet theater show for children between the ages of 7 and 9 at the San Pedro Government School in the Corozal District.

That activity was followed by a lecture at Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico where several Mexican Representatives involved in the eradication of Human Trafficking held a one on one discussion with students of the high school.

Presently an agreement exists between Belize and Mexico to combat Human Trafficking but according to Jose Alfredo Contreras Mendez, President of the Commission of Human Rights in Quintana Roo, there is much more that needs to be done.

This afternoon in Belize City Dr. Emilio Maus, a specialist from the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico, presented a lecture on “Human trafficking and Child Exploitation”. A photo exhibition titled “Human Rights through Your Eyes” was also presented at the Institute of Mexico in Belize.
