The Ministry of Health today issued a press release notifying the public that an outbreak of measles is ongoing in 33 different countries in Europe and transmission has been reported in 5 countries in the Americas.
According to the release, measles is a very contagious disease which is passed through unprotected coughing and sneezing by an infected person, and a single case can cause an epidemic among unvaccinated persons.
The Ministry of Health is asking that all persons who have not been vaccinated against measles contact the nearest public health center immediately, and is also asking that all travelers going to or coming from Europe, North, Central or South America review their vaccination status and obtain the measles vaccine if they have not already done so.
The symptoms of the disease are a fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red eyes. There hasn’t been a case reported in Belize since 1991.
