In March of this year the National Drug Abuse Control Council NDACC along with HECOPAB joined in observing World Tobacco Day on March 24. As part of the activities both organizations invited secondary students to participate in a short competition where each was required to write a short poem in the campaign against tobacco usage.

From the submissions made the poems were judged by their prose and creativity and two students of New Hope High School were successful in winning first and second place.

Elijia Flores and Andre Sosa were the second form winners. Both students were signed up for the competition by their teacher.

“I usually try to expose them to something more than just English especially when it comes to writing and in them expressing themselves. I was fortunate enough when a teacher came to me and told me about the competition that they were having so I went in there and asked them if they wanted to compete and they were more than willing. I had a whole class writing the poems and then five of us sat together and selected the best ones to send.”

Elijia Flores- 1st Place Winner

“My work consisted of warning people not to take tobacco and why tobacco affects other people lives, damages marriages and breaks up families. If you put it in other words I tell them that tobacco can be found almost anywhere since it is a legal drug and anyone can buy so you don’t know who takes it and who does not.”

“Do you advice your friends not to take tobacco?”

“Yes I do.”

Andre Sosa- 2nd Place Winner

“Tobacco gets you high and it is not good for you because it can lead to death.”

Yari Catzim- Reporter

“What inspired you to become a part of the competition?”

Andre Sosa- 2nd Place Winner

“My teacher because she constantly told us that tobacco is not good and it is bad for your health.”

Both students enjoy writing and were very happy with the results of their hard work. And better than that, the research for the competition taught them more than enough to make them want to keep away from tobacco.

Elijia Flores- 1st Place Winner

“I feel great amazing and wonderful. I would like to thank my parents, teachers and the administration here at school for getting me the opportunity to participate.”

Andre Sosa- 2nd Place Winner

“Don’t take tobacco because you can become addicted and it will difficult for you to stop using it.”

“How do you feel to see that you won a $25.00 gift certificate?”

“I feel good because I will be able to buy my math se for exam.”

Elenita Perez- Teacher

“These persons who won have always enjoyed writing and by writing the poem they expressed what they feel. They are aware that tobacco is not good for their physical health. By writing the poem they were able to bring the message across and not only to the class but also to other teenagers out there who don’t see it as something that is dangerous but eventually it does cause harm to them.”

Yari Catzim- Reporter

“So you would say that such competitions are effective in carrying out the message.”

Elenita Perez- Teacher

“I would certainly agree with this and I think that the prize they won is certainly a motivator to make them want to participate but in doing so they also have to do some research and find out what are the effects of tobacco in their bodies and by doing so it makes them aware.”

The first place prize was a $30 certificate for a dinner for two at the Dinner House. The second place winner got a $25 gift certificate from A&R.
