The United Democratic Party held a convention over the weekend in the Orange Walk South political constituency and reports are that Rosendo ‘Chendo’ Urbina emerged as the new UDP standard bearer in the area. Now normally we wouldn’t feature Urbina in a newscast. In fact, we kind of lost track of him after he was badly beaten by Orange Walk Central Area Representative John Briceno in the last general elections! Last we heard he had suffered a nervous breakdown and had moved out of the country.
As it turns out, Urbina has apparently been Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico for some time now. We confirmed that with a quick call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this week. But that’s when things got a little confusing. If Urbina is being paid to represent Belizeans in Mexico, then what was he doing here for the past four months campaigning in Orange Walk South?
Today we did a little more investigating and found out that as Ambassador to Mexico Urbina receives between $50,000 and $75,000 for the year. In addition, his home in Mexico and all his bills are paid by government and in addition to that, he receives a daily stipend of $150US per day, every day of the week.
And of course, we weren’t surprised to learn that while Urbina has been in Orange Walk campaigning for the past four months, he has still been receiving his hefty salary as Ambassador to Mexico, complete with all the perks. We added up just his daily stipend of $150US a day and figured out that in four months Urbina has collected a whopping $36,000 extra…and that’s for not even doing his job as Ambassador.
On a positive note though, somebody sent us a photo of Urbina taken recently and he looks like he has at least partially recovered from the nervous breakdown he suffered after his humiliating loss to Briceno in 2008.
