A woman from Orange Walk Town is tonight in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after she received several chop wounds to her head and face. Reports are that yesterday at around 4:00pm Orange Walk Police found the body of 52 year old Maria Elena Baeza lying face down on a feeder road just off the Yo Creek Road with three chop wounds on the head, two on the face and one on the back. Her body was found a few feet away from her black Ford Ranger Pickup truck.
There are several accounts as to what happened yesterday, but we will stick to the family’s version. When we spoke to Baeza’s brother this morning he told us that yesterday morning when he visited his sister’s house located on Unity Street he saw a bicycle in the pan of her pickup truck. He became suspicious and started calling out her name but there was no answer. Several knocks on the door also proved futile so he left thinking that his sister was not at home.
Reports are that while Baeza is in critical condition, she has been talking to her family, and what she has told them is that she was at home and heard her brother calling out her name. She was unable to respond however, because at that time a man who had entered her home was allegedly holding a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her if she made any noise.
Baeza told her family that the man then took her to the area where she was found and chopped her several times leaving her for dead. CTV3 News understands that nothing was stolen from the residence so burglary has been ruled out.
Police are now looking for one Orlando Sanchez from San Lazaro Village who they believe can assist them in their investigations.
