Screen_Shot_2013-11-14_at_8.32.31_PMTonight there is more to report on the ongoing disagreement between the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and the Belize Sugar Industries Limited. For weeks we have been reporting that there is unease in the Sugar Industry since BSI has refused to meet with the BSCFA to discuss revenue sharing as it pertains to bagasse, a by-product of the sugar cane.

While the miller is saying no to negations, the BSCFA says there is an agreement with B.S.I. on revenue sharing. Based on that clause farmers are asking for ten dollars per ton of bagasse used to produce energy and sold to the national grid.

The issue has seen a halt on the renegotiations of the new agreement between the miller and the producer. In a release issued a few days ago BSI invited BSCFA to meet in Belize City to continue discussing the new agreement and touch the bagasse issue at a later date. The BSCFA responded by stating they would need to meet with all branch Chairmen to discuss whether or not they will entertain the invite.

That meeting took place today and the news is not good because the association is saying that they have a mandate to keep and cane farmers have decided that unless they sign an agreement that involves bagasse, they will not be delivering any sugarcane on the proposed date for the new crop season.

Alfredo Ortega- Vice  Chairman, BSCFA, COM

“We went on and discuss in regards to the letter that BSI sent to the chairman and really and truly the outcome of it was that we won’t be going to negotiate with BSI unless they include negotiation to the bagasse because the main issue in the negotiation is the bagasse, there are certain thing that we have agreed upon within the agreement but the main focal point at this time is to come to the table and let us negotiate in regards to the bagasse.”

“Have you guys submitted a letter saying that we have declined your offer to meet on Tuesday?”

Alfredo Ortega- Vice  Chairman, BSCFA, COM

“Yes as we speak the secretary of the CEO is sending the letter via e-mail and a hard copy will be sent to them today.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter

“Now sir it is kind of contradicting because you guys want them to meet and now they are giving you guy a date to meet but yet you are no accommodating that request, isn’t that a little bit contradictory?”

Alfredo Ortega- Vice  Chairman, BSCFA, COM

“No, because they know from the very first incept that on the agenda that doesn’t comes to play for the negotiations, it has very good things but that can be dealt with in another meeting not precisely on that date so what we have sent to them is that we are prepared to meet with you but we want you to include within the negotiation a negotiation for the bagasse and if that is not include then we will be unable to meet on that date that they have put.”
