The National AIDS Commission of Belize aims to provide updated and relevant information on HIV for persons living with HIV, at-risk groups, social partners, health professionals, the public and other stakeholders in the response to HIV. Several activities were hosted back in 2013 to bring across awareness as to how to avoid the deadly virus. Today, President of the National Aids Commission in Corozal Town met with his directors to set up a road of plans for 2014. The plan for this year is to have more activities to bring more awareness to the general public.

“We’ll be getting more support be it financially, be it technical support from the secretariat itself on what we want to implement in Corozal District and also we talked a little bit about how and where we will be meeting as the committees and also as secretariat, to join hands when it is relevant for us to execute different programs.  One thing that I am glad for is that we really came to an agreement where we assured that we won’t be reading from different notes, where we will be singing from the same hymn notes and that is something that makes me remain calm and tranquil.  We want to reach to the community more and more, so we want to sensitize them about the importance of getting an HIV test, how is it that it can help us in our lives if we are tested positive and if we are tested negative then what are the things that we need to put in place as it relates to our sexual lives, our sexual activity, our sexual behaviours, we want to have a healthy Corozal, we want to have a Corozal where they will be in zero, no HIV infections or reports at the hospital and that is the road that we want to go so we want to reach out to the community even more with campaigns, with trainings, with sporting activities, of course tying in HIV AIDS awareness information.”

In 2013, the National Aids Commission hosted a survey with students in both rural and urban areas to have an inside feedback of their sexual life.

Elmer Cornejo   President of NAC

“We read reports that come from the ministry of health and they will have a percentage but I don’t have that percentage on the top of my head right now, but we have been decreasing over the years.”

Victor Castillo – Reporter

“Will the decrease have to do with the awareness that you all bring across?”

Elmer Cornejo   President of NAC

“Definitely, the decrease comes along side with the millennium development goals that we want to meet by 2014, where again we want to reach at zero discrimination, zero stigmatization, zero HIV infections and zero rated deaths as relates to AIDS.  We noted that the Urban and the Rural youth are both actually sexually active and the difference between them is not really much, the difference lies at the point where they have to decide their sexual behaviour then they encounter themselves in an scenario like that, for example, I am a youth of the rural community and at the time of sex I may decide, I have the knowledge about how I to protect myself but I may decide not to protect myself there and then I put myself into a risky behaviour that could make me get HIV infected if my sexual partner is HIV positive because if she is positive then she gives me a great chance of being infected with HIV as well.”

Interesting to note is that the 2013 survey has shown a high percentage of youths engaging in sexual activities as early as the age of thirteen.
