soybean2In 2010 the Republic of China on Taiwan Mission along with the Government of Belize launched a Soy Sauce Project here in Orange Walk Town. A few months after, the project was extended to the Corozal District with the aim of improving income to families. Each district had the participation of ten womens groups who learned step by step the creation of Soy Sauce. While in the Corozal District the learning process was launched about a month ago here in the Orange Walk District the Womens Group has completed the course and produced some 150 gallons of Soy Sauce which was official introduced into the Belizean market today.

Annually Belizeans consume some 500lbs of imported Soy Sauce. But with Belizean women now producing their own Soy Sauce that amount is expected to be cut in half over a four year period.

Meet the newcomer on the Belizean Market - WOW Soy Sauce produced by 10 Women’s Groups from the Orange Walk District. With the women producing some 6,000 liters or 11,000 bottles of 12oz Soy Sauce at a value of $33,000 the new product was officially launched today into the Belizean Market.

Reports show that between 2005 and 2008 the importation of Soy Sauce came at a cost of $535,943.20. Now with Belize producing its own soy sauce that amount is expected to decrease.

Charles Bacab- National Coordinator for Food Processing

“Well the quality, we are going to work on the quality because when we talk about quality there are issues, of course, we cover the issue of food safety that is definite but when it comes to taste, aroma, texture and those things we are going to test that off with the market itself that we are going to do shortly. And it will be a kind of adjustment of the product because then the concentration of the product is there, it only a matter of adjusting the concentration, diluting it and then we will have the final product which the consumer will say if they like it or they don’t like it. If they don’t like we are going back again and re-adjust until we get it correct.”

“So the despite of the project was launch today it will still not be sold in the market as yet?”

Charles Bacab- National Coordinator for Food Processing

“It will be tested in the market and this suppose to start next month in July and part of the testing will be selling because if people want to buy we are going to sale but if they want to taste first there is going to be taste first.”

The Soy Sauce Project was designed to last four years with the expectation that by the end of the fourth year the project would prove sustainable and function as a business. If by the end of the fourth year the project proves to be successful the Government of Taiwan will award the Women’s Groups a micro-loan program to build a standard facility for processing Soy Sauce.

The Belizean product has a life span of 1 to 2 years and will be available at all supermarkets and stores countrywide.

CTV3 News understands that members of all Women’s Groups will receive training in Food Handling, Standards, Quality Assurance, Food Safety, Business Management, basic accounting and entrepreneurship.
