Screen_Shot_2014-03-18_at_7.45.45_PMThe 2013/2014 crop season got off to a late start due to the halt of negotiations between the Belize Sugar Industries Limited and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association over revenue sharing of Bagasse. But that impasse now forms part of the past and the crop season is on the right track. So much so, that tonight word is that Belize will be exporting more sugar starting this crop season. According to Vice Chairman of the BSCFA Comittee of Management, Alfredo Ortega, Fair Trade has increased its quota from fifty thousand tonnes. The BSCFA received the letter for the new demand in the month of February.

Alfredo Ortega – Vice Chair

Ortega says they expect to fill the new demands in this year’s crop adding that he believes they can meet the new demands despite the late start in crop.

Alfredo Ortega – Vice Chair

And so far, up until March second, sugar cane farmers had delivered 262, 528 tonnes of cane at a Tonne of Cane per Tonne of Sugar quality of 10.19 compared to last year the same time in which they delivered 201, 277 at a TCTS of 10.48. Ortega adds however, that there is more that can be done that will ensure continued improvement in production quality and quantity.
