Screen_Shot_2014-04-15_at_8.03.19_PMThe audacity of criminals these days is daunting. For one young woman, this is an understatement after she was held up while on shift at a thrift store in Orange Walk Town today. The armed robbery played out shortly before ten this morning at the Orange Walk’s Bargain Center located on Main Street and it was all captured on camera. Dalila Ical reports.

Dalila Ical – Reporting

Two men entered the Orange Walk’s Bargain Center located on Main Street. They were a dark complexion male and another police are identifying as a Hispanic male. They held up the cashier on shift and stole cash and phones. The entire incident was captured on the surveillance camera at the store and here is a look at what transpired.

The incident lasted for just under two minutes. And in that time span, the two individuals, clearly young men, managed to rob the store out of thousands of dollars. Hugh O’Brian is the store owner.

Hugh O’Brian – Proprietor

“Came by the counter and they took a plastic bag and they loaded the plastic bag with seventeen of our phones and they cleaned out the cash registered.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“How much money was taken in total?”

Hugh O’Brian – Proprietor

“In cash it was only about $250.00 it was sort of early in the morning so there wasn’t much sale yet at that point in time but more important they took away a good stock of our more valuable phones; a total of seventeen good phones ranging the price of about $199 to a thousand dollars.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So you haven’t made the calculations yet in terms of the phones?”

Hugh O’Brian – Proprietor

“Yes, yes the total loss for the business after today’s hold up was just around $7200.00”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“Now is this the first time that this has happened here at the center?”

Hugh O’Brian – Proprietor

“We’ve had other incident before but this is the most serious one, we had people come in and steal and put it in their pants or on their shirt and we had one incident just about a month ago where someone came in and bended over the counter and took two or three phones from the showcase and so it is a bit frightening because my son and I have gotten into business together and he is a young fellow, he is 23 years of age and you know he is trying to make a life for himself . We did Catch up a fairly good image of one of the guys and the other guy was smart enough and covered his face with his shirt and he had his cap hanging low and so he tried his best to avoid on the camera but the other one, one of the robbers was caught on camera and we had a fairly good image of that person.”

This is only one of many similar incidents that have transpired over the months and from what we understand, the cashier on shift was left understandably very shaken. O’Brian is left worried for the safety of his family and store adding that the situation is disheartening.

Hugh O’Brian – Proprietor

“I must say that I am really, really sadden by the direction of our country is going and our leaders are just setting bad example for our young people and this is what the result of it we reap what we sow.”

Police are asking the public’s assistance in identifying the men seen on the surveillance footage. Anyone with information can contact the nearest police station.

The police are investigating the incident and are using all available evidence to make an apprehension; however, no one has been detained for the incident. Anyone with information on this latest robbery is asked to contact the Orang Walk Police Department at 322-2022 or call 911.
