Screen_Shot_2014-04-15_at_8.03.30_PMThere are many ways to make a living; it’s a matter of innovation, creativity and in some cases courage to step out of the norm. And that is exactly what some women have chosen to do as they have signed up for classes under the Mujeres Ayudando a Mujeres a Superarse, MAMAS, program. The program has been ongoing for years but throughout the course of its implementation, the courses provided for women have been evolving ever so quickly. Today, the women are taking barbering classes under the cosmetology class. Today we joined the women as they were busy working and learning.

The women are already about half way through the cosmetology program which goes beyond the manicure and pedicure lessons. It has extended to teaching women to do various forms of art such as face painting for children, which has been one successful addition.  Iliana is one of the students who have found the lessons both fun and fulfilling.

And according to these women, one good thing about this class is that it can be done from home. Now this is how these women spend their Tuesday mornings. In the afternoons, they prepare to give haircuts…for free. Jesimar Cal is the instructor for this part of their course.

“The ladies to help themselves to and some of them don’t have nothing much to do at home and we teach them different styles of haircuts and what is not and help them in different way to take classes here under the MAMAS group like cosmetology. We are doing general but we just started with one and two because those are like the easiest ones and right now we are moving on to the back way hair trim and we are going by step and so far they are doing so good.”

Classes are currently ongoing and they meet up every Tuesday.

The public is informed that the women give free haircuts to any interested male. They can just show up at the classes held on San Narciso Street in Orange Walk Town. Remember, the haircuts are free of charge.
