Last week Friday the Belize National Selection for the Special Olympic World Games 2011 in Athens, Greece left Orange Walk with much fanfare and tremendous support. Since then weve been waiting anxiously for an update, so today we dropped in at St. Peters Anglican School where Peace Corps Volunteer Christen Eure told us that from all reports, the team is having a ball, no pun intended.

“They’ve been Training and practicing, they arrived at the airport and were treated like royalties from the very beginning and they were met by eight officials from Special Olympics and whipped off to the Welcome Centre and then to their hotel room and they have been eating more food that they can possibly eat. They’ve been to the acropolis doing site seeing and they have also been training playing a couple games. They played against Pakistan and Paraguay they won Pakistan 6 to 2 and Paraguay they lost by one point. Sydney is doing very well he scored a goal today against Pakistan and he scored a goal against Paraguay from the pictures he just looks as if he is having a great old time.”

And the level of optimism remains very high from all quarters.

“The coaches are very optimistic every day the boys build up their team competition and their moral and how they work together. There were six goals today and all of them had repeat assist so all of them are working together defending the goal very well so they are improving even now after we have practiced for over a year they are over there and still improving their skills.”

The game can be viewed online on ESPN3 between 11:00am and 12:00 midday on Saturday. As always, we wish our boys well.
