Last night we told you about the bar brawl in Libertad Village Corozal that has left a man from Belize City clinging to life at the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital, another hospitalized at the Corozal Community Hospital and a third behind bars. Yesterday not much was revealed by authorities as they were still carrying out their investigations. Tonight though, there is a bit more of information coming out of the Corozal Police Station as it relates to how the fight actually started.
Reports are that at around 10:00pm on the 11th of May, 34 year old Giovanni Borland of Western Pines 8 miles, Belize District and Joseph West were at a local bar in Libertad when an argument ensued between them. At that point West left the bar and headed out to another bar located about two lanes away. But it seems that Borland was not willing to let things go because reports are that he followed West and picked up a machete on his way. When he caught up with West a struggle ensued between them.
Borland somehow managed to take away the machete from West. But that’s not the end of the story. Shortly after Giovanni and West’s confrontation, Denmar West, Joseph’s brother, came out of the bar and was heading home when he was reportedly attacked with an object by Giovanni. He sustained injuries to the forehead and above the right eye. In sight of what happened to his brother Joseph set chase after Giovanni with the machete he had taken away from him earlier. While running from Joseph, Borland stumbled and fell to the ground. This is when Joseph reportedly inflicted a chop wound to Borland’s head.
The victim was transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is in a critical condition. Police detained Joseph West, who sustained a small cut wound to his right thumb. He was arraigned at the Corozal Magistrates Court this morning where he was charged with attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm. Because of the nature of the offence, West was not offered bail by Magistrate Hurl Hamilton. Instead he was remanded to the Hattieville Prison until July 15th 2014 when he is scheduled to reappear in court.
