May 11th 2014 marked the end of week 16 of the 2013/2014 sugar cane crop season. The report, provided by the Belize Sugar Industries Limited, shows that for week 16 the factory milled forty eight thousand nine hundred and eighty four tons of cane. To date, the factory has milled a total of eight hundred and thirteen thousand six hundred and thirty nine tons of cane. Last year the factory milled six hundred and sixty four thousand nineteen tons cane during the same time frame.
Taking a look at sugar production, four thousand eight hundred and ninety six tons of the sweetener was produced for week 16. An overall of eighty seven thousand five hundred and thirty one tons of the product has been produced so far. Last year, the factory produced sixty eight thousand seven hundred and ten tons of sugar during the 16 weeks of crop.
This week the factory worked at a grinding rate of six thousand nine hundred and ninety eight tons cane per day. Overall, for the 16 weeks of crop, the grinding rate per day stands at seven thousand five hundred and thirty four tons cane. Last crop it was at six thousand one hundred and forty eight tons cane per day.
The report on Cane Quality shows that for week 16, juice purity first express stood at 85.73%, 86.80% during the 16 weeks of crop and 86.16% last year.
This week it took 10.01 tons of cane to produce one ton of sugar. For the 16 weeks of crop TCTS stands at 9.30 while last year it stood at 9.66 for week 16.
As for the sugar extracted from the cane, 94.78% was recorded this week, 95.36% during the 16 weeks of crop and 93.46% last year during the same period.
This week factory time efficiency stood at 98.30%, 95.37% for this crop and 94.91% last crop.
Of note is that the targeted milling figure for the week was exceeded by over 2,000 tons cane.
According to BSI/ASR cane quality was lower than last week as a result of a decline in sugar in cane, which caused a similar decline in the TC/TS ratio. The highest levels of mud in cane for this crop were also recorded this week. Farmers are reminded to target for harvest at this time, low lying fields that will not be accessible once the rainy season starts.
