Screen_Shot_2014-05-29_at_8.28.48_PMIt is a great feat for schools to excel not only in academics but in sports as well. Here in the Orange Walk District there are quite a few schools at the primary and secondary levels that have done great in these areas year after year. One of them is the Louisiana Government School and today they have more good news to share with the public. The teachers and students have been hard at work and for the first time, they will be dividing into three groups to cheer on their candidates who will be taking part in national competitions, get this, on the same date. Here is a look at what they will be up to on June sixth.

Dalila Ical – Reporting

At eleven thirty this morning students poured out of their classrooms for lunch break, but two groups of students and an individual strong speller were out long before to share with us their exciting trips scheduled for June 6th.

First, Isabel Swasey, a standard six student says she is putting her all and getting ready for the National Coca Cola Spelling Bee Competition.

Isabel Swasey – Student

“Definitely and I am putting a hundred percent to this.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So I suppose that you guys are studying with your teachers, reviewing every single thing, how is that going?”

Isabel Swasey – Student

“Is going pretty good, a little excited but not nervous because I never made it to nationals until this year and I am aiming for the best actually.”

And then there is the music group who were chosen to represent Orange Walk in the National Festival of Arts in Belize City.

Lucio Alcoser – Music Teacher

“They are very happy and always looking forward for those trips.  I remember last year we went to play at the Radisson and they reminded me teacher are we going back again where the elevator is and so those things are novelties for them and they enjoy it as well and being in the music group.”

Also gearing up for a national competition on June sixth is the school’s female volleyball team. Aliyah Leiva is the MVP and she says they have what it takes to bring back the trophy from the National Primary School Volleyball championships.

Aliyah Leiva – MVP, Volleyball Team

“For us to win the nationals and for all those who tried their best but we deserve to win the nationals because this is a team that has been practicing only for about a month or so while the other teams has been practicing; especially like Chan Pine Ridge has been practicing over a year now and we still had the chance to win them and we practiced for a little while, we have a srealy strong team and we are hoping for the best.”

Enrique Ayuso – Vice Principal

“We are very proud or our children and the work that they have been doing along with their teachers and the support that we have been getting from the parents in the different areas and as you can see we have both representations in academics, in sports and in arts such as the music coincidentally all three national events take place on the same day which is on June the 6th so basically we have to divide ourselves in three different contingents; one headed to Spanish Lookout and two heading to Belize City this one is for the festival of arts and the other one is for national volleyball female championship and so we are very proud of our children and we hope to have success in all three.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So I guess it is an exciting day for a lot of your guys?”

Enrique Ayuso – Vice Principal

“Absolutely, we always encourage our children that success comes for those who work for it and we really hope that they succeed and even if they don’t come in first we know that they are winners already.”

And given their history, there is no doubt these students will keep bringing more trophies home.
