noimageIt is pharmacy week and a few of the pharmacies in Orange Walk Town are observing the week with special promotions and discounts to their clientele. To find out more about the week, our news team spoke with Alejandro Lopez, a senior pharmacist.

Alejandro Lopez – Pharmacist

“Pharmacy week is about bringing awareness and at the same time educating the general public with regards on how to go about taking medications, what are the possible side effects, and in this way we can interact more with our patients because the general community believes that the pharmacist is only to count and dispense medication that we have moved away from that actually we now as pharmacist have more interaction with the community, we are here to advice, to counsel, and at the same time to educate the general public with regards on how to go about taking your medication, how often and how serious side effects are etcetera.”

Pharmacies are also a business, but there is something about it that sets it apart from the typical business establishments within the communities says Lopez.

Alejandro Lopez – Pharmacist

“We are a business yes but at the same time it is one of the more important sectors in the health sector because the patient goes to see the doctor, the doctor issues a prescription and it is the duty of the pharmacist to read the prescription and ensure that the mediation being prescribe is within the correct dosage and the correct interval of time that the patient needs to take the medication so we play a very critical role the health care for the community.”

Lopez says that there is always a need for more pharmacists and having more licensed and registered pharmacists is important in the country’s heath care system. As part of the week, a few pharmacies are holding discounts and promotions for the week, including the brown bag initiative.

Alejandro Lopez – Pharmacist

“The brown bag day is when we ask all the patients in the community to bring their medication that they have in their locker at home, we will rebelled them, we will sort out what is expired, discard what is expired, and we will write auxiliary labels and we just basically go all over their medications and give them clear and concise instructions as how to go about taking them again, or if they need to revisit a doctor and change their medication and we will be offering discount in the pharmacy  this week and we also be having our grown bag activity and at the same time advising and counseling our patients, some of the pharmacies that will be doing this for sure is Melanie de la Fuente, Phillip de la Fuente and myself am not sure about other pharmacy.”

Everyone is invited to take part in the open bag initiative.
