Screen_Shot_2014-06-12_at_8.37.31_PMGlobal Blood Donor Day, established in 2004, is observed every year on June 14th, around the world including Belize. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary life-saving gifts of blood.

The focus of this year's World Blood Donor Day campaign is "Safe blood for saving mothers". Every day, about 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of mortality, morbidity and long-term disability.

The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths.

In Corozal Town, Global Blood Donor Day will be observed tomorrow Friday June 13th. Assistant Manager at the Corozal Community Laboratory, Clemente Novelo, told us about the importance of being a blood donor.

Clemente Novelo - Assistant manager.

“The World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on 14th of June of each year but the Corozal Hospital laboratory management decided that they will celebrated it on the 13th which is a Friday, one of the basics majors why we collect blood is to help specially the maternity mothers, to being awareness to the people who actually that are out there that they need to donate blood and the reason why is because in case of an accident, a chop wound or a stab, in case of a person who is carrying a miscarriage they have blood available and that is the reason why we are trying to.”

Victor Castillo – Reporter

“To become a blood donor, I know that there is a procedure that is being followed in a nutshell can you tell us a little bit more of what are some of these procedure that you guys would normally would take measure of?”

Clemente Novelo - Assistant manager.

“One of the importance of becoming a blood donor is having the age of eighteen, 18 years old, a healthy person, we actually do the first draw of a blood test and check what is his blood type, what is his blood level, and base on the blood type and level and healthiness of the person we proceed to the second step.  The second step is a questionnaire one in English and one in Spanish, one is actually based on the person’s life style, sexual lifestyle behavior and medical condition. After the person has already answered the questionnaire we precede to the second one, we always make sure that it is not the amount of blood that we are collecting but it is the quality of blood that it requires.”

According to Novelo, after the blood is taken from the donor, the sample is sent for screening before it is used on a patient. And if your blood is at a high level, then we suggest you become a donor and the first step you need to take is simple, just present yourself at the Corozal Community Hospital.

Clemente Novelo - Assistant manager

“Well, tomorrow first of all we are beginning with our staff, they will be actually be donating blood tomorrow to assist the community and then we invite the community or persons who are healthy they will have the privilege of donating blood, if you see tomorrow our package we have t-shirts, we have some mugs, and we just receive some pens to share tomorrow and some special pins that we will be giving and some special little tokens for tomorrow and then we will be decorating our laboratory tomorrow.”

Victor Castillo – Reporter

“What advice would you give the public out there that they know for a fact that they can be a donor at this opportunity?”

Clemente Novelo - Assistant manager

“I always say that giving blood is always giving life and that life could be your own life.”

In an average, the Corozal Community Hospital uses approximately 40 units of blood per month. On World Blood Donor Day, the World Health Organization is calling on countries to improve access to safe blood for saving the lives of mothers.
