Sugar City Art House thats the name of the recently opened souvenir shop here in Orange Walk Town. The art shop which has on sale 100% locally produced handicrafts was official declared opened this afternoon by the Banquitas House of Culture. The local crafts shop is located at the lower flat of the Orange Walk Town Council and today we found out that despite the space being small, the bargains are huge.

All these artifacts on display and on sale at the newly opened Sugar City Art House were produced by artisans of the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts. As they say the products are 100% Belizean made out of natural materials and other products.

At the souvenir shop locals and tourists can purchase jewelry, paintings, limestone masks, handmade hammocks and even crochet blouses and headbands. The idea to open the souvenir shop came after artisans decided about a year ago that they needed a place to showcase and sell their work.

“All the artisans got together and we came up with this idea that we wanted to sell the souvenirs and we came to the Mayor and he offered us a place ad we are so grateful. All of the art work that you see here is from the artisans in Orange Walk. Whatever you would like for them to do for you, you can bring your design and they will do it for you or if you want anything in particular you can just ask for it and we can make it available for you also I would like to mention that this is a place where all artisans, especially from our district are welcome, they can bring all their work and whenever it is sold we work on a commission basis and then this is their art house so, we just have a manger who manages the Art house for them.”

By promoting the local products the house of culture plans to generate some extra bucks for artisans.

“I would like to invite everyone to come and visit our art shop and see all the beautiful work that we have from our own people from Orange Walk. You can drop by from Monday to Saturday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. We also offer whole sale for those who are interested and for reselling we also give a discounted price. For any information that you would like you can just drop by and you can even give us tips on how we can improve for this is just an initial stage and we will see how it will work out.”

Other artisans interested in having their products on display and on sale are asked to visit the souvenir shop located on the lower flat of the Orange Walk Town Council Building.

Sugar City Art House will also prepare packages to put on sale during special occasions.
