The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association has been suspended by FLOCERT for six months, that’s the amount of time the association has to get its act together or face de-certification for the second time since they became certified by Fair Trade.

Approximately three weeks ago the BSCFA was audited by FLOCERT and that audit resulted in 8 non-compliances, four of them major. While the BSCFA immediately wrote a letter to FLOCERT outlining the measures that would be taken ne to address the non-compliances, FLOCERT went ahead and suspended the association who received the bad news yesterday.

As mentioned at the top of the story if the association does not rectify those non-compliances to FLOCERTS satisfaction they can face de-certification, meaning cane farmers lose all Fair Trade benefits including millions of dollars.
