On the night of July 7th, sixteen families were left homeless after a fire swallowed five buildings and destroyed three others located on Conch Shell Street in the Boca Del Rio Area of San Pedro Town.
As a result of the inferno, the families comprised of 66 adults and 32 children lost everything and had to move in with other family members or in a shelter. In order to assist the fire victims, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., presented a cheque of five thousand dollars to the Belize Red Cross San Pedro Branch.
The cheque was presented along with boxes of clothing, food items and toiletries donated by the BTB staff. During this morning’s presentation Hon. Heredia Jr. stated and we quote “We are very happy that we are able to provide some support to the families affected by this fire and while the donation in no way can compensate for their loss, we sincerely hope that it will ease their displacement and bring some semblance of comfort in their lives.” end quote.

As previously mentioned, the blaze started around 8:30pm on July 7th on the upper flat of a two-storey structure rented by Lisber Bardalez. Bardalez lived in the upper flat with her husband, children and mother and all indications are that the fire started from her son’s room and rapidly spread to the other structures.
As for the cause of the fire it remains unknown.
