Yesterday we broke the story of the Orange Walk businessman who lives on the Chan Pine Ridge Road that became the latest victim of extortion. While we told you that an operation was launched by police and that a woman was detained by authorities while the money transaction took place in Belize City there was not much that we could have revealed since the matter was under investigation.
But tonight police have official released the details of the case and have even charged two persons including a 15 year old Guatemalan female minor. He is no other than 23 year-old Edwin Flores who allegedly tried to extort Wilbert Valencia of $8,000.
Valencia reported to police that on Tuesday, Flores contacted him and demanded that he hand over $8,000 or else, a member of his family would be murdered. According to Valencia, he reported the matter to police, and as mentioned last night, a sting operation was set up as the transaction was set to take place at Lord Ridge Cemetery in Belize City.
As police waited, they observed when a 15 year old female arrived at the location, picked up the package and left the area. She was followed to the King’s Park area where she handed over the package to Flores. That is when police made their move and detained both individuals.
Twenty three year old Flores was charged with blackmail while the 15 year old was charged with abetment to blackmail.
Both Flores and the 15 year old were arraigned at the Belize City Magistrates Court before Magistrate Sharon Frazer and were denied bail. Flores was remanded to the Belize Central Prison while the 15 year old, who is illegal in the country, was remanded to the Youth Hostel.
We understand that while in court, Flores accused officers of beating him up and Magistrate Frazer ordered that he be taken to the KHMH. Both Flores and the 15 year old are scheduled to go back to court on September 16th 2014.
