Screen_Shot_2014-07-25_at_8.05.48_PMAfter a productive crop season, today the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association once again celebrated their annual Dia De Los Caneros only that this time the vent was celebrated in Corozal. Each year at the end of the crop season, BSCFA organize a day with an elaborate opening ceremony, musical presentations, booths, products on display and the invasion of crowd and good cheer from cane-farmers from the eighteen divisions of the northern districts. Reporter Victor Castillo and video Journalist Jesus Melgar were at this year event. Here is that story

Under the theme of “Celebrating 55 years in the sugar cane industry, strengthening the development of our small farmers” more than one thousand caneros celebrated their day.

A parade led by the Corozal Community College Marching band followed by religious mass, marked the opening of this year’s festivity.  El Dia de los Caneros now forms part of tradition and is basically held in honor of the closing of the crop season.

“Me siento muy contento con la participación de miembros del gobierno, con los de la cámara de representantes, el líder de la oposición que hizo su presencia también creo que eso demuestra el nivel de respecto que nos hemos ganado como caneros, el nivel de respecto que nuestra organización tiene y me siento muy contento per aún más por la participación de nuestros caneros.”

“Aproximadamente como cuantos caneros salieron el día de hoy?”

“Aproximadamente calculo como uno 800 caneros ahorita en la mañana y esperamos que en el transcurso del día otros hagan su presencia pero creo que es muy bueno a pesar el horario que empezamos creo que es un buen numero en lo que empezamos y esperamos que en otras ocasiones pues tengamos mayor participación de los caneros.”


Food stalls, business booths offering cane farmers and the public excellent deals, and informational booths, decorated the Rotary Park in front of the House of Culture in Corozal where the event was held.

And while the day caters for those who work the field and play an important role in the Sugar Industry, the event also saw the presence of Government officials including   Hon. Hugo Patt, Minister of State in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Agriculture and Leader of the Opposition Honorable Francis Fonseca.

“It’s always a great pleasure for me to participate in the cane famer’s day, it is an opportunity for me on behalf of the People’s United Party to pay tribute to our caneros and caneras to offer our respect and support to them and to acknowledge the hard work that they do every day in contributing in the growth and development of our society, our economy, the cane industry, the sugar industry is vital importance to Belize’s development and so we have to do everything we can as a people to support our cane farmers and to support the future of the cane industry.”

Today awards were handed out to the San Estevan Branch from the Orange Walk Town division for achieving the highest cane quality factor of 1,0683, while the San Narciso Branch took the award for the Corozal Division.
