prison-5On July 2nd 2011, 29 year old Belizean mason James Pelayo was arrested by Orange Walk Police after he was found in possession of three 9mm Luger brand cartridges as he was walking along Riverside Street. As a result Pelayo was charged for keeping ammunition without a gun license. Pelayo was also found in possession of 4.2 grams of cannabis and was charged for being in possession of controlled drugs.

This morning when Pelayo appeared at the Orange Walk Magistrates Court he pled not guilty to both charges. Since no bail is granted for a firearm or ammunition offense, Magistrate Linden Flowers ordered that Pelayo be remanded to prison until his next court date scheduled for August 4th 2011. Flowers advised Pelayo that he could apply for bail through the Supreme Court. If bail is denied however, at the Supreme Court level, Pelayo was advised that he would need to wait 90 days before he can go before the Magistrates Court and request bail.
