While police officers were on high alert at the Northern Border on Friday before and during the transfer of four Belizean prisoners, their attention was drawn to a grey vehicle that was parked on the left side of the road on an unnamed street within the Corozal Free Zone.
As police approached the vehicle, the driver sped off and police set chase. During the chase police observed when a male person who was sitting in the front passenger seat threw a parcel out the vehicle which stopped a few seconds after.
Police immediately surrounded the vehicle and ordered the occupants, two males and a female, to exit the vehicle. The trio was then taken to the area where the parcel was dropped and police found it to be a transparent plastic bag containing green leafy vegetable substance suspected to be cannabis.
The occupants of the vehicle alter identified as 39 year old Jose Manuel Matus, 32 year old Noeli Maeli Manzanilla and 18 year old Brian Steve Martinez, were escorted to the Corozal Police Station where the suspected drug was weighed and amounted to 1.005 kg. All three persons were arrested and charged for the offence of drug trafficking.
