Screen_Shot_2014-08-04_at_7.50.24_PMWhat was supposed to be a festive weekend in the North turned out tragic for two families as they mourn the deaths of their loved one. We have both full stories and start off with the murder of a teenager from the Corozal District who lost his life early Saturday morning while having breakfast at the Fort Cairns Market Plaza.

When we arrived at the area the scene was still fresh and the body of the male teen had already been transported to the Northern Regional Hospital. Reporter Maria Novelo has the story from the Police perspective. Before airing the story, we must mention that viewer discretion is advised.

Known for its tasty breakfast cuisines, the popular Garcia Tacos Place quickly turned into a crime scene shortly before 6:00am on Sunday morning as 18 year old Corozal resident Roy Bayliss was having his fill of tacos at this stall. While several shots were fired, one penetrated the right side of the face causing him to bleed profusely, fatally wounding him.

“Upon police arrival a male person was seeing lying on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot injuries in his right side of his jaw, the person was then picked up and taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he died shortly thereafter, his name was learnt to be Roy Bayliss, 18 year Belizean labourer, 3rd Street North Corozal Town.”

While police are following several leads, best information to us is that Bayliss and another individual got into a scuffle near a popular night club but that was quickly intercepted by security. Bayliss and his companion then made their way to town where he would meet his untimely death at the hands of a lone gunman, says police.

“A male person came up to him and fired several shots at him and thereafter walked off and got on a bicycle and rode away, so far the police have some fifteen persons detained pending investigation and we are looking at several angles and following several leads at this time.”

Eyewitnesses told police that several shots were fired but no expended shells were found at the scene.

Police have detained and are questioning over 15 persons at this time. Police could not ascertain if the incident is gang related or stemmed from an altercation earlier in the night.
