Dalila Ical – Reporting

Even after two days, this post keeps burning.

Fire officials received the call around six minutes past one on Saturday morning. The report however, was that a bush fire was threatening a residence at the village but when the fire officials got to the scene, they found that an entire house was ablaze. Miguel Medina, is the fire chief at the Orange Walk Fire Station.

Miguel Medina

“We hurry got into operation and took control of the fire and in approximately five minutes and in that we prevented the fire from spreading to the other adjacent building that were on the same compound, by that time the water was exhausted from the trucks so we had to come back to Orange Walk town and full back the tanks and returned and completely extinguished the fire, upon our investigation we found out that and we were given information of the owner of the house who was Mrs. Sarah Pech, that his sons was the one who occupied the house and was living there and he, probably he was under the influence of alcohol and she saw when her son was lighting up the house with some papers and probably he might have used other accelerant like gasoline or gas or something like that, she doesn’t know exactly what was the motive for him to take that decision and light up his house actually when we arrived there the house was completely engulfed in flames.”

There was not much they could do to salvage the house says Medina. We understand that as of that night police launched a search for the person believed to be responsible for the blaze.

The case is looked at as arson and the family has made an official report to authorities. The total estimated loss is about six thousand dollars.

The house, nor its contents, was insured.
