Screen_Shot_2014-08-06_at_8.09.04_PMSince Monday, Belize City media have been reporting on a protest from 50 angry Belize Maintenance Limited workers who hurled bags of garbage in front of City Hall after things came to a head because the Council owes their employer for 19 weeks of services or almost 1.48 million dollars. Things got dirty when employees returned on Monday to work and the company informed them that they cannot continue to support their payrolls.

And while they made their sentiments known they paid the ultimate price since they were locked up for several hours and charged for littering.

Today the People’s United party issued a statement regarding the treatment of the workers expressing their ‘dismay and disgust’ in the manner in which they were treated. The release says quote ‘the BML workers a majority of whom are women have been roughed up, manhandled and humiliated in a manner than smacks of high-handedness, draconian conduct and blatant attempts at intimidation,” unquote.

The release ends stating that any attempts now at damage control by the Prime Minister and his government are too little too late and the PUP stands in solidarity with all workers of BML as they seek only to receive their just remunerations.
