no-image-thumbTonight the Corozal Police formation has its hands full as it is conducting an internal and criminal investigation into the death of 47 year old Jesus Tamai. This morning at around 5:45, Tamai’s lifeless body was discovered hanging from his black shirt tied to the window of the cell he was occupying.

Today when reporter Victor Castillo visited the Corozal morgue, he caught up with Leading Detective Fernando Valladarez who expounded on the investigation.

“Sometime around 5:40 this morning, the police visited the cell block area in order to get the cells clean and upon checking cell number one they found a Hispanic male later identified to be Jesus Noel Tamay, 47 year old hanging from the bars of the window to the back of the cell, this person was immediately assisted, however at the time his body was motionless and he was apparently dead. The body was later transported to the Corozal community hospital where Doctor Correa pronounced him dead on arrival; so far the investigation is not showing any foul play so we believe it to be a suicide.”

“You mentioned that there is an internal affairs investigation going on, how many police officers were working last night shifts?”

Fernando Valladarez – CIB

“We had six police officers working the 1 to 7 shift and yes we do have an internal investigation being conducted at this time by Mr. Rivero of the internal affairs Belize City, and this is just because where the incident happened to be exact the holding cells so the investigation is on their part and this is only to ensure that there was no sort of police involvement which could have resulted into tough Mr. Tamay.”

According Valladarez, Tamai was detained for disorderly conduct last night at around 10:45.

“There was an incident by a Chinese business establishment sometime after ten last night and it is believed that Mr Tamay was somewhere in the vicinity of that establishment and he later ran towards the police station where I understand he was behaving disorderly towards the police officers that were working, he used some very insulting words, I am not sure if he threatened the police hence the reason he was detained he was actually was to be released at 6am as it appears at that he was either highly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

A post mortem was scheduled for this afternoon but up to news time the results have not been released.
