no_photoYesterday we reported on the on-going feud between parents, teachers and the union Administration at the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School in Progresso Village. The situation has escalated to the point where parents are alleging that two teachers are incompetent, tardy and have been drinking on campus. While several of them share the same sentiment, they explained yesterday that on countless occasions, they tried to meet with the SDA Management however; there concerns have gone in the wind. Today, we contacted Pastor Leslie Gillett, the General Manager of the SDA Schools throughout Belize to weigh in on the issue at hand. Gillette says steps are being taken to resolve the issue.

Pastor Leslie Gillett – General Manager , SDA Schools

“The Press Release is saying well, first of all like in any other school in the country of Belize there are problems at the Progresso School we recognize that of course that be taken to resolve the problem, to correct the anomalies that maybe there, that there is no reason or which to get rid of anybody at this point from Progresso School because there are all issues that can be corrected by people doing and saying differently from how it has been done.”

“The remedial taking place is a process, how long will it take to kind of get the issue resolve, do you foresee it before the school year starts?”

Pastor Leslie Gillett – General Manager , SDA Schools

“Well, the issues that are there are issues that have been resolve some of them and others can be resolve as the school year progresses.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter

“A lot of parents are feeling that they won’t take their child to school come Monday if those two teachers in question are not replaced or removed, how do you respond to that?”

Pastor Leslie Gillett – General Manager , SDA Schools

“Anybody and the parents need to know the rules and they need to know the laws, you do not remove teachers if what they are saying the teachers are bad then meaningful evidence not that this one hear or I say or I think I saw no that no, real hard evidence must be presented and even them there is a procedure that has to be followed before anybody is being removed and removing a teacher means first of all the teacher can be discipline and if there is no correction with the teacher behavior then you look at other steps that you would made but if I don’t like a teacher or a teacher looks at me bad then that cannot be a reason for just to pick up and say I will remove a teacher because that is not according to the education rules and it is no right according to my bible principles because everybody is innocent until proven guilty.”

The Parents are also alleging that the teachers are incompetent, tardy and have been caught habitually drinking on campus. Those allegations were quickly dispelled by Pastor Leslie Gillett today when we contacted him via telephone.

“That problem that they are holding on to is a problem that was in the past, this past school year he teacher have been making and lets not isolate the problem of the teachers getting to school from the problems that you know with the road to Progresso because they are related but the teacher have made their effort to improve their arrival at the school.  An allegation we cannot handle it that way ad we have to be very careful because things like that I totally disagree because you are dealing with people’s character you put those things on the air if we see any fault that anybody claim we will do our proper investigation then we will deal with those matters.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter

“Now the Press Release mentions that there is a PTA at the school but they are not really carrying out their functions and roles.”

Pastor Leslie Gillett – General Manager, SDA Schools

“Again here is the thing, maybe the history of behavior of the people in Progresso should be clear, and I am not talking of everybody there are a lot of good people there, but some people in Progresso there history is there and that history cannot be ignored, the other matter is of course, like I said before everything has to follow due process and it is everybody part if there is no willingness to correct thing in Progresso then I due time policy right procedures whatever has to happen with people and teacher in Progresso will happen but all of us must remember that we cannot take the laws into our hands and I kind of surprise that the media has allowed these people because we know that that is illegal.”

Pastor Gillett says trials aside; at the end of the day, they are all there for one purpose, to educate the children of Belize. The new school year opens on Monday and parents have clearly stated that the will not send their children to school if their demand of transfer for on particular teacher and principal of the school is not met.  We’ll keep monitoring this story as it develops.
