Screen_Shot_2014-09-12_at_7.45.54_PMDistinguished men and women were honored at the 2014 Tribute to Belizean Patriots at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts held last night. The National Honors and Awards Act was passed on August 16th, 1991. Among those receiving the award were at least three individuals from the Orange Walk District.


They include outstanding Belizean, the late Alfredo Martinez who has been awarded the highest Order of Belize. Mr. Martinez is also remembered as a past Rotaractor & most distinguished Diplomat. Another outstanding Orange Walkena who was awarded hails from Yo Creek Village, Mrs. Felicita Cantun.


She was awarded for proudly promoting our Hispanic & Indigenous roots, and took home the Meritorious Service Award. The other person awarded was Mr. Ramon Cervantes Sr. who was given the highest award for National Heroes, the Order of Distinction. The act states that each year honors and awards may be conferred to individuals, living or dead, who may have rendered outstanding and meritorious service to Belize. Two Corozalenos also received awards last night. They are Mrs. Sylvia Vargas and Mrs. Elda Sutherland who both received the Meritorious Service Award.
