Screen_Shot_2014-10-01_at_7.58.49_PMOctober first is observed as Senior Citizens Day and presents a perfect opportunity to long term contributions of older persons within our communities. Here in Orange Walk, the Help Age has organized a week filled of activities for at least one hundred of its members. On today’s agenda was an afternoon of interaction and fun as members gathered to play games at the Help Age Center on Stadium Street. Arcelia Leiva is the President of Help Age, Orange Walk.

Arcelia Leiva – President, Help Age Orange Walk

“It was real fun because we play chalupa, bingo and they had conversations of what they did and how they spend their day and we interacted with each other and we had lots of jokes in between we say jokes and like one of them the eldest of the group she came to this gathering and she is 96 years old, Mrs. Magdalena and she had lots of fun and she is full of life. Through these gatherings we encourage them to be don’t be sedentary, to move around and to do something and to speak out what they want, their feelings and here they tell us how they feel and we let them feel safe here that they can say anything.  We encourage them to really speak out where in other areas they feel inhibited to speak here they feel free and we feel like a family we let them feel like a family here.”

The activities continue tomorrow with a tea party with even more senior people.
