October 16th is observed as International Credit Union Day and this year it is being celebrated under the theme “Local Service, Global Good.” And if we take into consideration this year’s theme, La Inmaculada Credit Union fits it perfectly as they are highly recognized locally and internationally for their service and work.

Over the years LICU has grown to be one of the number one banking institutions countrywide extending their services all the way to Belmopan. And that is where the institution celebrated International Credit Union Day today as they also commemorated their first anniversary.

“The theme Local Services Global Goods is very, very relevant because we taking all of our local services, we bringing it to the homes of our entrepreneurs to the citizens of our communities and we are also reading out to the rural areas and we are also commemorating and highlighting the Belmopan Branch that we are celebrating our one year anniversary this month and we deiced to create the big bang and the focus in Belmopan rather than at our main offices, so we are having our market day, our open day whereby we have invited quite a number of our entrepreneurs and also some NGO’s who share our vision of being social responsible.”

Celebration aside, the institutions General Manager, Yolanda Gomez, who has been at its helms since its inception, spoke about the importance of being part of a credit union.

“We were on the air waves, on the media houses this morning trying to create a greater awareness whereby one out of every three Belizeans is a Credit Union member owner and we believe that that is not enough there is so many good thing happening at the Credit Union, we serve the sector that is more challenging and we believe there is a need we can satisfy for each and every one of our Belizean citizens so one out of every three that is definitely not enough, for us here in Orange Walk we have a penetration of like 42% it is still not even 50% so we definitely have more work to do and there is still more we can do to create that awareness whereby people can learn of the many good we have. We are there to take the hands of these entrepreneurs and walk with them, that is what really make a difference that we offer that guidance, we offer that technical assistance and we conduct supervise credit.”

LICU without a doubt has had many accomplishments but one of the major ones says Gomez is knowledge sharing.

“Knowledge sharing, definitely educating the membership, definitely educating the community and educating in the mere sense of the importance of savings, the importance of budgeting, the importance of accessing credit at the most affordable cost, the importance of capacity building and technical assistance even for the entrepreneurs those wanting to startup a business, those in the agriculture field, those who are artisans, those tour guides. We also just took another group of honey producers, we have conducted training for tour guides whereby we have at least ensured 40 of our own becoming successfully employed and these are just some of the few things that everybody can enjoy and that we can proudly to have claimed to have made an impact in the lives of many for them to improve their standards of living.”

International Credit Union Day has been observed on the third Thursday of October since 1948. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and the way it promotes its achievements.
