Today is observed as World Food Day. In Belize it is being commemorated under the theme, “Family Farming: feeding the world, caring for the earth, creating affordable, accessible, sustainable, healthy and nutritious food in Belize”. The day has been observed since 1981 and this year, the global objective of the theme is to end hunger.
The day was celebrated with an event held at the ITVET compound in Belize City where the aim was to highlight the importance of family farming, smallholder farming and urban agriculture by focusing attention on efforts to reduce hunger and poverty, provide food security and nutrition, improve livelihoods, manage natural resources, protect the environment and achieve sustainable development in the country.
The event saw the participation of hundreds of school children and there were various stalls displaying agriculture related themes and even proper hygiene. The overall objectives of observing World Food Day globally are to encourage attention to agricultural food production and to stimulate national bilateral, multilateral and non-governmental efforts to this end. It also hopes to encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries.
It is also to encourage the participation of rural people, particularly women and underprivileged communities in decisions and activities that influence their living conditions. It also hopes to increase the awareness of the issue of hunger while strengthening the international and national solidarity in the struggle against this, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to achievements in food and agricultural development.
